CEU Course Description

The idea of cultural competence has recently taken a backseat to cultural humility. Cultural humility is an ongoing, reflective process of treating others with respect by identifying and addressing one’s own biases as well as power imbalances that can impact relationships. Cultural humility is becoming the norm because it is not something that can be gained from simply acquiring knowledge about specific cultures. This concept requires a greater commitment from providers, especially those dedicated to providing person-centered care. According to the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework, culture is one of several client factors that contribute to a person’s identity as well as their occupational performance. Therefore, occupational therapy services cannot be effective or tailored to the person unless a provider administers them using cultural humility.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Differentiate cultural humility from cultural competence.
  2. Order the outcomes that can result from using cultural humility.
  3. Classify the main tenets of cultural humility.
  4. Relate the importance of health literacy to cultural humility.
  5. Predict how implicit bias impacts someone’s cultural humility.
